A Song recital with songs by female composers: “love, longing and parting”
Mezzosoprano Florence Awotula and pianist Clemens Müller present a song recital with songs by female composers, celebrating the 200-year jubilee of Clara Schumann this year.
The programme combines German and English Songs which depict various aspects of love – falling in love, heartbreak, romantic reminiscing, yearning for the beloved and having to say goodbye.
Featured songs include Clara Schumann’s „Sie liebten sich beide“, Josephine Lang’s „Ob ich manchmal dein gedenke“ and Fanny Hensels „Neue Liebe, neues Leben“ , as well as the expressive “Three Browning Songs” by Amy Beach and the wistful „When the Swallows homeward fly“ by Maude Valerie White.
A contrast is made by two pieces for solo voice, that draw a historical line from the medieval mystic composer Hildegard of Bingen to the contemporary composer Vivienne Olive, born 1950. Works by female composers have mostly been overlooked by society and are often excluded from prevalent concert programmes. Slowly the awareness is rising, and works are beeing rediscovered, but there is still a lot to be done.
Discover new art songs in this special concert by female composers you should definitely get to know!

Unknown treasures out of the archives of Württemberg and Saxony
The two ensembles cantus imperitus and Ensemble Nobiles engage in works of unknown composers from their respective home regions. Together they created a unique programme for the choir festival, that brings the diversity of regional music to Leipzig. Many compositions were rediscovered in cellars and attics of churches, that have every right to be rescued from oblivion. The ensembles are accompanied by the baroque orchestra consortium consonans from Stuttgart, with whom they will perform works by Johann Samuel Welter and Samuel Friedrich Capricornus.
